The earlier date is more likely, given his age, although the NSW medical register is rarely wrong
Gave lectures on Physiology at Sydney School of Arts in 1841 and at Maitland Mechanics Institute 1845
He was seeking two young men as boarders soon after his marriage (Maitland Mercury 17 February 1844)
From 1852-1862 the published lists of the NSW Medical Board have him as John Stuart, Maitland, reverting to John Stewart, Maitland, from 1863-1864 and then John Stewart with no address until 1885!
He probably left Australia in 1848 or 1849
His gravestone is at the Old Burying Ground, Simonstown, Cape
