  • According to the old AMPI index card John Stewart of Dunblane qualified LFPS Glasgow in 1829, whereas the NSW medical register has 1839
  • The earlier date is more likely, given his age, although the NSW medical register is rarely wrong
  • Gave lectures on Physiology at Sydney School of Arts in 1841 and at Maitland Mechanics Institute 1845
  • He was seeking two young men as boarders soon after his marriage (Maitland Mercury 17 February 1844)
  • From 1852-1862 the published lists of the NSW Medical Board have him as John Stuart, Maitland, reverting to John Stewart, Maitland, from 1863-1864 and then John Stewart with no address until 1885!
  • He probably left Australia in 1848 or 1849
  • His gravestone is at the Old Burying Ground, Simonstown, Cape
