Advanced Search
Advanced searching on AMPI:
Using the advanced search feature, you can
search the full text of AMPI. For example, by entering a
ship's name, you might find the entries for that ship's doctors
on various different voyages. By entering a place name you might
identify doctors who lived there.
But note that AMPI does not include a complete
set of data for every doctor. Some records are very brief.
Thus a search for "Bendigo" will retrieve some but not
all of the doctors who lived in Bendigo.
Be aware also that place names vary
considerably, and so do their spellings. Thus Bendigo is often called
"Sandhurst", Port Fairy is often called "Belfast",
Geelong is often called "Corio", and Ballarat may be "Ballaarat".
A ship's name has only one correct spelling,
but ship names are often spelled incorrectly in old records. In
addition, several ships in succession sometimes had the same name.
Searching for dates is limited to searching
for years ("1843").
